Well of Flames

I am showing only a portion of the log that I carved telling part of the history of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. The section that I am telling about shows the six who originally landed on July 31, 1847 on New York shores. On the morning of June 18,1847 Mother Theresa, our foundress, and five other women left the convent in Munich to begin their journey to America. They actually did not leave German soil until June 25 and then made a stop in England because they found that the coal they had to fuel the ship contained sulphur which would have wrecked the boiler on the ship in a short time. So on July 13 the "Washington" would finally get on its way. Mother Theresa became very sea sick on the journey while the others could enjoy some of the sights. In the carving you will notice two Sisters in the center supporting each other. One is Mother Theresa Gerhardinger and the other is Mother Caroline Friess, who stayed in America and established many schools. The two of them, Mother Theresa and Mother Caroline, were very different in character and in stature, but both held an extreme love for God's will and the spread of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
