The Flight

This carving shows the connection of the Holy Family’s Flight to Egypt and the flight of immigrants crossing over the borders. There is a sharp contrast between the darkness of the moon on the one side and the light of the sun on the other with the angel separating the two.

The barbed fence runs through both scenes and points out the thin wires that separate freedom and captivity. Under the night sky many attempt to cross over barriers carrying only children and water as possession. Inside of themselves they carry their faith in our Lady of Guadalupe to protect them from harm’s way while putting their trust in a better life for themselves and their families.

In contrast, Joseph and Mary with the child rest on their journey to regain strength for the long walk to safety. The few trees offer shelter from the sun and a moment of peace to regain strength. Together they search out a better life for their family.

The angel who was present to guide the Holy Family and who split the Red Sea in two for the Israelites is still present today to break down barriers and protect all of us on our journeys. At times we take on the role of the angel for others and reach inside ourselves to provide that which is needed by another. The journeys that we travel with others may not be over boarders or to Egypt, but one thing is the same: the flight is always easier when accompanied by someone we love.
