Springs of Our Birth

This relief carving is a tribute to John the Baptist, as last Sunday we celebrated the Baptism of Jesus. John of course baptized Jesus and he continually pointed the way to someone beyond his grasp. He reminds us of the importance of entering into new lifeand allowing it to bubble forth. In a gesture of raising his arm he stands as a sign of what it is that we each must rise above as baptized individuals. John, who I placed standing within a shell, constantly reminds himself of what his mission was, that of preparing the way of the Lord. He always prayed, Christ must increase and I must decrease.
