Chartres Musings
As the train pulled into the little town of Chartres outside Paris, I could not believe my eyes. There on the horizon was a looming Gothic Cathedral. As I approached it, I was torn between seeing the sculptures outside and going inside to see the beauty of the stained glass. I wanted to be both places at once. The stained glass like the sculpture outside was intended to teach medieval people how to conduct themselves in this world, so they would have Hope and transcend death into eternal life. The second purpose was to beautify and create an atmosphere of awesome mystery. Thirdly it was to recreate in physical form John's vision of the walls of the Heavenly Jerusalem. Coming home that night I went to a concert of Vivaldi's music at Notre Dame Cathedral. This sculpture reflects my images of that day.
