This is an explanation and picture of one of the two piece that I have hanging at the Basilica of St Mary in Minneapolis, MN during the month of September. I received third place on this piece at the original competition at the Benedictine Monastery of St Paul in Maplewood, MN. If you get a chance to go to the Basilica, both carvings are hung together in the aisle next to the St Joseph altar. I described “Offering” in my last post and today I will give an explanation of “The Heart of the City.”The beating, pulsing heart is what, at first glance, stands out in this carving. On second look, the fluttering of the Spirit’s presence can be seen dominating the piece. The vibrations and movement of the heart are dependent on the Spirit’s form. The rays reaching outward carry with them the many faces and individuals of the city, along with the construction of nations. The Spirit’s energy is found as the backbone of all that exists.
