Saint Augustine

August 28th is the day we celebrate St Augustine (354-430) Bishop and Doctor of the Church. He was born in Northern Africa and was not drawn to Christianity until he met and came under the influence of Bishop Ambrose in Milan. His mother Monica had always prayed for him that he would be converted and did live to see him baptized.Augustine became the Bishop of Hippo, a post he held until his death and is probably most known for his autobiography called "The Confessions of St Augustine." In this book he shows the hand of God guiding him toward happiness. One of his famous lines is depicted on the carving. I also used another quote of his to capture the mood of the carving, "Our hearts are restless until they rest in you."IMG_2542Saint Augustine, 11"h x 9"w x 1"d
