Assisi

In 1181 Francis of Assisi was born in Assisi, Italy. He died at the age of 45, on October 3,1226. What is important and remembered about Francis is that he taught all of us the importance of living with the touch of Jesus in our life. Francis discovered in his life the peace and joy that surpasses all understanding. He engaged in the balancing act of love.Francis has long been a favorite of mine. In 1989 I was blessedto spend a week in Assisi and have been back three times since. The atmosphere radiates the beauty found in this man's journey. In this carving, I emphasized through wood burning, different areas of the city as seen through the eyes of the olive tree. Francis is contained within the mortar of the buildings, the cobbled streets and the roots of all the olive trees that grow there. Like the olive trees he has outlasted all seasons. The journey that Francis made was in his heart. He teaches us to not reflect on the journey too long because it dims the dream and then the journey replaces the dream. The two are a balancing act of love.
